Abstract
Pensar nos processos de transplantação e fixação da língua portuguesa envolve considerar também os meios que permitiram essa consolidação linguística. No caso do Brasil, o português ainda é uma língua relativamente homogênea, apesar das muitas variações fonéticas que existem dentro do país. Nesse sentido, parece plausível pensar que a literatura popular portuguesa – em folhetos – foi a única que, testemunhando o percurso dos portugueses e de sua língua materna, sobreviveu até os dias de hoje, resultando naquilo a que muitos especialistas da cultura popular brasileira designam como literatura de cordel. Assim sendo, este artigo pretende demonstrar a maneira pela qual a história da literatura de cordel brasileira – sua apropriação, fixação e desenvolvimento – colaborou, ainda que minimamente, para o processo de consolidação da língua portuguesa num território em que muitas outras expressões linguísticas circulavam e, como se sabe, ainda circulam.
