Abstract
Este artigo procura propor que o gênero literário conhecido como distopia se configura, a partir do prisma da teoria crítica da sociedade, como ferramenta de análise radical da modernidade. Para tanto, é feita uma breve caracterização do que seria tal gênero literário a partir das noções de horizonte utópico e função distópica. A partir daí se elegem três obras distópicas para pôr a prova tal argumentação: 1984, de Orwell; Fahrenheit 451, de Bradbury; e Admirável Mundo Novo, de Huxley. Destacando algumas características destes livros, é possível lançar luz acerca de traços marcantes do nosso contemporâneo, tais quais: as formas de controle da subjetividade, a configuração hipertecnológica da atual sociedade e a dinâmica de submissão da cultura à civilização. Afirma-se, deste modo, a literatura como dispositivo a partir do qual se torna possível realizar uma crítica das forças que constituem o presente. Estas distopias são, pois, formas de resistência face aos efeitos de barbárie cada vez mais presentes no tecido social.
