Abstract
RObert King Merton (1910-2003) fue uno de los sociólogos más connotados y representativos de la disciplina sociológica en el siglo XX. Ciertamente es uno de los grandes sociólogos norteamericanos, si no el mayor después de Talcott Parsons, su maestro. Y no olvidemos que la sociología fue llamada al giro del siglo XIX: la "Ciencia Americana". Al tiempo de
su muerte -apunta Erwin K. Scheuch en una nota obituaria reciente-la obra de Merton había recibido 17.500 citas en revistas de ciencias y humanidades censadas a este
propósito', una estadística muy elocuente de su muy amplia influencia intelectual.
