Abstract
The gastrointestinal effects that some patients undergo when taking iron salts in therapeutic doses (diarrhea, constipation, gastritis,…) are known. These effects are slight and transitory. Suckling babies under six months do not usually need iron supplements, except for the premature ones, in which case an iron supplement is indicated from the second month of life onwards. But in this case, a two month premature baby suffered from gastrointestinal effects after taking an iron supplement. The Pharmaceutical Care detected and corrected this health problem in first instance, although the baby was not taking a medicine but a nutritional supplement.
