Abstract
O sistema norte-americano de educação superior mostra inúmeros sinais de sucesso: abrangência na dimensão do ensino, resultados assombrosos na pesquisa. Ao mesmo tempo, exibe numerosos paradoxos e tendências preocupantes. Tentando contextualizá-los, o artigo inicia com um exame exploratório e descritivo sobre os "quatro andares" do sistema, indicando a seguir o modo como se massificou, depois da Segunda Guerra. A conjuntura do final do século mostra uma sociedade cercada pela combinação de retração econômica e desigualdade ampliada, que ajuda a compreender as contradições do crescimento do sistema de ensino superior e da educação norte-americana, em sentido amplo. Aparentemente, cobertura crescente parece conviver com inclusão em declínio, mostrando sinais de estrangulamento.
