Abstract

ABSTRACT: Although the tithe of the Sierra was not originally strictly speaking a tithe, throughout the early modern age it became an exaction which was added to those paid by transhumant flocks at their place of origin. Every year, the product of the sale or the direct administration of the sheep obtained by it, increased the funds of ecclesiastical dignataries within whose jurisdiction the "dehesas" which provided pasture for the sheep during the winter months was found. It's analysis brings to light the complex mechanims developed by the Church for its collection, the operative market on wich it was based, and its profits. It also allows us to define certain aspects related to the evolution of transhumance which were impossible to establish through the figures recorded in the general census of cattle.
