Abstract

Abstract: The changes in the culture of appearances in the 1960s are examined by means of first lady Maria Thereza Goulart and couturier Dener Pamplona de Abreu. In the approach, documents and memoirs of the press, in particular, an edition of the Journal “Manchete” of 1963 enabled the scaling of social, cultural and political processes involved in the creation of Brazilian fashion. It is evidenced how the relationship between the two characters, mediated by the clothes of couture, produced standards for the national fashion sense and created aesthetic standards that influenced female segments to appreciate the beauty and elegance of their bodies and clothing “à brasileira”.

Keywords: Fashion – Culture national – Elegance.
