Abstract
Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, prospectivo en el consultorio popular "El Morro", perteneciente a la Parroquia Petare, Municipio Sucre del Estado Miranda, República Bolivariana de Venezuela en el periodo de septiembre de 2005 a febrero de 2006, con el objetivo de determinar la influencia del ejercicio físico en la salud del adulto mayor. El universo estuvo integrado por 121 ancianos de la comunidad y la muestra por 66 abuelos que realizaban ejercicios físicos. Los datos se obtuvieron de las historias clínicas individuales y de la observación clínica del anciano utilizando las variables edad, sexo, enfermedades presentes en los adultos mayores y tratamiento que cumplían. Los datos fueron procesados, y se aplicó un análisis estadístico porcentual, obteniendo como resultados que el 54.54% de los abuelos practicaban ejercicios físicos, el 31.8 % se agrupan en el grupo de 60-64 años, con predominio del sexo femenino en un 57.5 %. El 69.56% de los hipertensos, el 73.80% de los que padecían artrosis y el 71.42% de los que manifestaron trastornos depresivos controlaron estos padecimientos; el 59.52% de pacientes con artrosis, el 50 % de asmáticos, un 43.47 % de los hipertensos y el 19,04%, de los que tienen trastornos depresivos disminuyeron la dosis del medicamento en el día. Se concluye que el ejercicio físico mejora la salud del adulto mayor y le garantiza una longevidad saludable.

The universe was comprised of 121 aged living in the community and the sample took 66 practicing exercises. Data were obtained from the individual medical histories and clinical observation of the elderly using the variables of age, sex, diseases they suffered from and medical treatments they received. Data were processed and to carry out the statistical analysis, percentage method was applied obtaining that 54.54% of the elderly practiced physical exercises. The 31.8% got into the group of 60-64, prevailing female sex (57.5%), hypertensive 69.56%, suffering from arthrosis 73.80% and the 71.42% having depressive disorders could be controlled . The 59.52% suffering from arthrosis, 50% of the asthmatic, 43.47% of the hypertensive and the 19.04% of those having depressive disorders diminished the dosage of medications along the day. Concluding that physical exercise improves health in the elderly and ensures a healthier longevity.
