Abstract
The context of european integration resulted in numerous questions and controversesregarding maintaining the national identity of each nation, once i twill obtain the membership of the EuropeanUnion. Many states saw this process as giving up the specificity of a certain nation, including the culturaltradition and the distinctive features of the national legislation, in favour of a new identity, based of differentvalues. Based on the ambivalence of the national and European identity, the elements which define the unity arethose who persist, determined by an „obvious ethno-cultural diversity”. In Europe, the cultural unity wasconsidered to be a solution, the common traditions representing the ones that give personality to the Europeanidentity.
