Abstract
Demência vascular compreende um declínio cognitivo global, atribuível ao efeito cumulativo das doenças vasculares cerebrais. Como resultado dos danos cerebrovasculares focais, são sucessivamente perdidas as sutis múltiplas habilidades cognitivas, inclusive, memória. Nossa compreensão da demência vascular tem evoluído através dos tempos, em parte devido à possibilidade de seguir as alterações pelos exames de imagens radiológicas e também, através do entendimento da organização neuropsicológica do encéfalo. Este artigo, revê, criticamente, o desenvolvimento dos conhecimentos da demência vascular, examina o estado da “leucoaraiose”, apontando as atuais áreas controversas atuais e discute a abordagem clínica da demência.
