Abstract
The story Leylâ and Mecnun is based upon the poems written by Kays addressing Leyla. The story has beenadopted in Arabic, Persian and Turkish literature and it is recognized as a global classics. In Classical Turkish Literature, the love story between Leylâ and Mecnun has been subject to poems. Mesnevies have been written for this story. Among them, the most famous one is that of Fuzuli. Some poets and authors of Contemporary Turkish Literature have also shown interest in the subject. Thus, some of them have re-written Leylâ and Mecnun story. Being a well-reputed author in the field of story writing and novels, Reşat Nuri Güntekin has a story called “Leylâ and Mecnun”. In this piece of work, Leylâ and Mecnun stories written by Fuzulî and by Reşat Nuri Güntekin have been broadly compared. Via this comparison, these stories that were written in two different periods of Turkish Literature have been analyzed; so similar and distinct aspects of them have been determined. In addition, the role of tradition in building literary works have been studied. As part of this effort, semantic differences in traditions have been aimed to be exposed
