Abstract
1. The value of an enrichment medium for Salmonellae depends on the nature of the material to be examined. In the present study practically equal relative numbers of infected samples were found using Müller-Kauffmann's medium (MK) and selenite brilliant green broth (SB). This concerned 2100 samples of pig faeces and 2400 samples of skin abrasions from pigs. By using 2 enrichment media simultaneously the number of positive findings in samples of faeces and skin was substantially increased. Results differed for 4200 samples of lymph nodes; when using SB a considerably higher number of samples was found to be positive than when using MK. 2. It has been found that making 2 streaks, each on one selective plate, from the same enrichment medium, considerably increases the number of positive findings. It has not been proved that a greater increase is obtained by making 2 successive streaks after 24 and 72 hours respectively than by making 2 streaks after 24 hours simultaneously. 3. It is recommendable to determine to what extent the increase of the number of positive findings described above—using 2 enrichment media and preparing streaks after 24 and 72 hours—, can also be obtained by using 2 flasks with the same enrichment medium and preparing two streaks after 24 hours on two instead of on one selective plate. This can be done by using 2 flasks with the same enrichment medium and preparing streaks after 24 and 72 hours on 2 plates each.
