Abstract
On July 18, 2019, Kurt J. Isselbacher, M.D. passed away at the age of 93, the final curtain on his six-decade reign as a renowned physician-scientist and the premier academic gastroenterologist/hepatologist of his generation. His family lost a devoted, loving patriarch; his former patients lost an empathetic, selfless, master clinician and advocate; his trainees and colleagues lost the ultimate teacher, mentor, career-and-life guide, and role model; and the academic community lost one of the leading physician-scientists and most influential giants of his generation in American medicine.
