Abstract
In addition to the environmental benefits from renewable energy development, a variety of reasons are also offered as justifications for government policies to promote these energy resources. These reasons include the creation of new jobs, often in geographic regions that face adverse employment conditions, such as remote and rural areas. It is important, therefore, that in order to assess the societal impact of renewable energy development, the impact of such development on employment be studied. This paper uses the U.S.A. state of New Mexico as a case study to examine the trends and role of green (renewable) energy employment and highlight some key methodological issues that create significant difficulties for studies of the impacts of renewable energy development on employment.
