Abstract
In the present work, SO3H-functionalized zeolite-Y (NSZ) was prepared from the reaction of zeolite-NaY with chlorosulfonic acid. The NSZ was used as an excellent solid acid catalyst for one-pot, three-component synthesis of 2-aryl-N-benzimidazole-4-thiazolidinones via condensation of 2-aminobenzimidazole, aromatic aldehydes and thioglycolic acid, in H2O-acetone at room temperature. Then, zeolo sulfuric acid was applied for the synthesis of tri-substituted imidazole derivatives via the one-pot and solvent-free cyclo-condensation of different aldehydes, benzil and ammonium acetate. This efficient catalytic approach offers several advantages, such as excellent yields and high purity, inexpensive procedure and ease of product isolation, the use of nontoxic and heterogeneous acid catalyst, shorter reaction times and milder conditions.
