Abstract
In France, suburbia has become an intellectual category regularly resorted to by the media, most notably the written press. It has even become the topic of a debate in which journalists and specialists actively take part. Urban sprawl and the new ways of life it underlies elicit diverging interpretations that transcend the usual ideological divides. Furthermore, the different geoethical registers used to characterize suburbia all end up dramatizing and discrediting a phenomenon that now appears to be a societal problem. Thorough debates on the political remedies that ought to be marshaled are nonetheless wanting.
