Abstract
The French Revolution not only opened a new cycle of politics in the Western world but also a new cycle of internal conflicts. The counterrevolutionary civil wars emerged of resistance to change in privileged sectors of the Ancien Régime and their ability to ally with large sectors of the popular classes. To achieve this goal, these reactionary forces needed to transform their starting positions and to establish new strategies. The duration and extent of counterrevolutionary civil conflicts during the nineteenth century depended of success in the process of politicization of society and the adaptation to the changing reality of power.
