Abstract
Numa praia próxima à foz do atual rio Douro, em Portugal, surgiu, no ano 124 de nossa éra, segundo narram velhos cronistas, baseados em secular tradição, certa imagem de Cristo Crucificado, mutilada, à qual faltava o braço esquerdo . Seme-lhante escultura, que outra lenda atribui ao cinzel de Nicodemos, fariseu converso ao cristianismo e testemunha ocular do drama do Calvário, foi, segundo a mesma versão, encontrada recoberta de algas marinhas, e a seguir piedosamente recolhida a uma igrejinha das vizinhanças, passando a ser nela venerada desde logo como taumaturga.
