Abstract
This article examines the legendary elements of Alif Laila (Arabian Nights) with a particular focus on its Urdu translation by Ratan Nath Sarshar. Sarshar, a distinguished Urdu writer and translator, played a significant role in adapting the tales for an Indian readership, ensuring that the linguistic and cultural nuances of the original Arabic text were preserved while making them accessible to Urdu-speaking audiences. The article explores the structural and thematic aspects of Alif Laila, highlighting its intricate narrative framework, use of storytelling within storytelling (frame narratives), and its incorporation of folklore, myth, and fantasy. A key aspect of the article is the linguistic and stylistic analysis of Sarshar’s translation. It delves into the use of metaphors, idioms, and rhetorical devices that enhance the narrative’s richness and readability. Additionally, the study discusses how the tales reflect moral, philosophical, and social themes, offering insights into human nature, justice, fate, and the complexities of life. The adaptability of Alif Laila across different cultures and literary traditions underscores its universal appeal, making it a cornerstone of world literature. By analyzing Sarshar’s translation, the article emphasizes the role of translators in preserving and reshaping literary heritage. It argues that Alif Laila is not merely a collection of fantastical stories but a reflection of cultural history, linguistic evolution, and storytelling traditions that continue to influence literature today.
