Abstract
Abstract Background Since its inception in the 1980s, the Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO) has been the gold standard treatment for patients with pre-arthritic hip dysplasia. It is important to be familiar with the foundational literature that guides the field of PAO surgery. The purpose of this study was to objectively determine the 50 most cited studies regarding the PAO and perform a bibliometric analysis. Methods The Scopus database was used for the initial search query and to gather the study list. The 50 most cited articles were selected for analysis; studies were excluded if they did not focus on the PAO. In addition to the study name and citation number, the first author, last author, year and journal of publication, country of origin, affiliated institution, study type, level of evidence, citation density, and PAO technique specificity were collected. Results The top 50 studies accumulated 9,952 citations (mean: 199 per article; maximum: 1,139), spanning 1988–2020, with a peak in 1999 (n=9). Seven countries were represented; the United States produced the greatest number of studies (n=28), while Switzerland accounted for the highest total citations (n=4,950). The majority of studies were retrospective case series, with level IV evidence predominating. Forty-seven studies (94%) focused on the Bernese PAO technique. Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research published the highest proportion of included studies, and R. Ganz (University of Bern) was the most frequent senior author. Conclusions The most cited PAO literature is characterized by early influential work from Switzerland and continued contributions from centers in the United States. These studies, largely consisting of case series, form the basis of current understanding of PAO technique and outcomes. This analysis provides a structured overview of the key publications that have shaped the field.
