Abstract
Abstract A novel method of the preparation of hollow polymer particles was proposed. Polybutylene succinate and chloroform were used as a polymer and a good solvent, respectively. A three-layer system was prepared in a vessel, consisting of a polymer solution layer, a water layer, and an anti-solvent layer. Reprecipitation was induced by bubbling gas into the polymer solution layer. As bubbles formed, the polymer solution was adsorbed onto their surfaces. Bubbles containing polymer solution rose the water layer and formed polymer particles in the anti-solvent layer. When decane was used as an anti-solvent, the hollow polymer particles were formed. This is attributed to the high precipitation ability of decane, as well as its high interfacial tension with water and high viscosity. Observations of bubbles in decane layer revealed that the three-layer sphere (water/polymer solution/bubble) ascended to the liquid surface. The thinning of the upper portion of the water layer caused the bubble collapse, leading to the formation of droplets of polymer solution containing fine bubbles, and then reprecipitation occurred to yield hollow particles. The particle diameter and shell thickness increased with increasing polymer concentration. The particle diameter, hollow diameter, and shell thickness increased with decreasing cross-sectional area of the vessel.
