Abstract
Helen Pearson; Princeton University Press: xii+350pp; June 2026; ISBN: 9780691207070 ... This book is a good read. The author, Helen Pearson, is a science journalist who has worked for Nature for over 20 years, winning prestigious awards. Her skills show clearly. But you need to adopt a suitably critical approach in reading. The scope is broad. The book doesn't deal with all aspects of evidence, only those that either grew out of notions of evidence-based medicine or have similar characteristics. But that still allows Pearson to range over social policy, policing, environment, business, education and public policy, as well as medicine. She describes the changes that arose from using approaches that appraise critically what might work, as well as the barriers that advocates of those approaches have tried to overcome, not always successfully. Importantly, the book covers differences of context between the fields it covers, as well as similarities. And the final part deals with challenges that increased in strength during the Covid-19 pandemic. The afterword gives good advice on how you can get involved in the “Evidence Revolution”, if you aren't already.
