The competition is sponsored by Oxford University Press (academic.oup.com), who will give the winner £100 or $150 to spend on Oxford University Press books. Closing date: 23 September 2026. The winner will be chosen randomly from the correct entries, and the solution published in a future issue. Nine answers need a new start before being entered into the grid – that is, you need to add one letter to the front of each of those nine answers to form a new, common word. Enumerations specify the length of the new, longer word. Sometimes more than one new letter is possible, but if you choose wisely the nine added letters can be anagrammed to produce something that is often a good start.
