Abstract
Abstract From the 1940s onward Colorado’s ores, landscapes, and peoples contributed significantly to the peaceful and military atom along the entire uranium fuel system, from mining and milling, to the production of electricity, and to the manufacture of plutonium pits for nuclear bombs. But as the Cold War came to an end, the radioactive legacy of the atom came into clear focus for citizens, for state officials, and for the nuclear industry. This article, at the junction of nuclear history, environmental history, and history of technology analyzes Colorado’s contributions to the nuclear enterprise and the challenges facing it in terms of cleanup of various toxic legacies.
