Temporalities of political representation, Sweden c .1830–50

Abstract This article examines the relationship between time and political representation in mid nineteenth-century Sweden. Between 1830 and 1850 demands for a comprehensive reform of parliamentary representation intensified as revolutionary upheavals spread across Europe. This article rethinks this issue with emphasis on political temporalities, that is, situated experiences and strategic configurations of time. While previous research recognizes the significance of historical narratives to questions of political representation, the multitude of underlying temporalities is notoriously understudied. Inspired by novel theories of time and historicity, this article shows that political representation was linked to a nexus of intertwined and conflicting temporalities.
