Abstract
Lay Summary Central nervous system cancers include many different types of brain and spinal cord tumors, and their impact on health is changing around the world. The authors of this study wanted to understand long-term global trends in these cancers and identify the reasons behind differences in diagnosis and survival across regions and tumor types. To do this, they analyzed worldwide and U.S. cancer registry data collected between 1990 and 2021 and compared patterns of new diagnoses and deaths across different tumor subtypes. They found that the number of new cases has increased over time while death rates have changed little overall, with aggressive tumors such as glioblastoma continuing to have poor outcomes despite advances in care, in contrast to less aggressive tumors that are being detected more often.
