Abstract
Abstract The distributions of free and kerogen-bound n-alkanes in coal samples from the Ishikari Group and the Hakobuchi Formation in Hokkaido, Japan, were investigated to clarify the molecular characteristics of coal-derived hydrocarbons and their implications for petroleum generation. Free alkanes were extracted using organic solvents and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and gas chromatography–flame ionization detection. Bound alkanes incorporated within kerogen were analyzed through ruthenium tetroxide oxidation of coal residues after solvent extraction. The free n-alkanes in the Hokkaido coals exhibit a pronounced odd-carbon-number predominance, suggesting a dominant contribution from higher-plant waxes. In contrast, bound alkanes released as mono- and dicarboxylic acids show different molecular distributions, reflecting alkyl chains incorporated into kerogen macromolecular structures. Comparison with previously reported crude-oil compositions from petroleum fields in the Hidaka region suggests that the studied coals possess molecular characteristics consistent with potential petroleum source rocks. These results provide new insights into the molecular structure of kerogen in immature coals and its significance for hydrocarbon generation.
