Abstract
Realism, as a prominent and enduring literary movement, has left a profound impact on global literature through its commitment to depicting life with authenticity and unembellished truth. This movement spans a wide spectrum of genres, encompassing poetry, fiction, drama, and narrative prose, where writers strive to portray society, characters and human experiences as they genuinely are free from idealization or romantic distortion. In the domain of Pashto literature, both prose and poetry have increasingly embraced realism as a serious mode of expression. Particularly in modern literary developments, realism has gained considerable prominence, with numerous accomplished writers contributing meaningfully to its growth. These contributions have elevated realism to a central position in contemporary Pashto literary discourse, offering insightful critiques of social structures, cultural norms, and individual struggles. Among the most prominent figures associated with realism in Pashto fiction is Zaitoon Bano. She has played a pivotal role in shaping the Pashto short story, skillfully weaving multiple themes into her narratives while presenting a compelling portrayal of social realities. Her works stand as exemplary models of literary realism, reflecting the lived experiences, challenges, and nuances of the society she depicts. Through her keen observation and narrative depth, Zaitoon Bano has significantly enriched the tradition of realism in Pashto literature.
