Abstract
Digital technology has become a fundamental determinant of academic success and future career opportunities in today’s higher education landscape. However, university students in developing countries continue to face significant digital inequalities, which limit their learning potential, academic performance, and social mobility. The main objective was to assess students’ access to digital resources, examine the relationship between digital inequality and academic performance, and analyze its influence on social mobility. A quantitative research design was employed, with data collected from 300 students across public and private universities using a structured questionnaire. The instrument measured students’ access to digital devices, internet availability, digital literacy levels, academic performance indicators, and perceptions of social mobility. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the distribution of digital access and digital skills, while correlation analysis examined the relationships between digital inequality, academic achievement, and social mobility. Regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictive impact of digital inequality on academic and social outcomes. The findings revealed that while 60% of students owned personal laptops and 70% reported reliable internet access, notable disparities remained, especially among students from rural and low-income backgrounds. Mean scores indicated moderate to high digital literacy (M = 3.62, SD = 0.84) and moderate perceptions of the impact of digital inequality on academic performance (M = 3.75, SD = 0.78) and social mobility (M = 3.68, SD = 0.81). Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing digital infrastructure, providing affordable internet access, and implementing targeted digital literacy programs. These interventions are essential for reducing educational disparities, improving academic performance, and promoting upward social mobility among university students. Overall, the study highlights that addressing digital inequality is critical to creating an inclusive and equitable higher education environment that fosters both academic success and future socioeconomic opportunities in developing countries.
