Abstract
The rapid expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) industry has accelerated the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver of technological innovation, safety enhancement, and cost optimization. This study examined the role of artificial intelligence in shaping innovation strategies and operational outcomes in the EV sector through a qualitative comparative case study of Tesla and BYD. The research adopted a case study approach based on secondary data collected from academic literature, company reports, and industry analyses. The analysis was conducted using thematic and comparative techniques to explore differences in AI adoption, innovation strategies, safety mechanisms, and cost efficiency between the two companies. The findings revealed that Tesla demonstrated a high level of AI integration, particularly in software-driven innovation, autonomous driving systems, and predictive analytics, which significantly enhanced vehicle performance and technological advancement. In contrast, BYD focused on cost-efficient manufacturing, battery safety, and scalable production, utilizing AI primarily for operational optimization and battery management. The study further found that Tesla’s approach emphasized technological differentiation and premium innovation, while BYD prioritized affordability and mass-market accessibility. Both companies successfully leveraged artificial intelligence, but through distinct strategic pathways aligned with their organizational goals. The results highlighted that AI plays a crucial role in transforming the EV industry by enabling innovation, improving safety systems, and enhancing production efficiency. The study concluded that artificial intelligence serves as a flexible strategic tool that supports diverse business models and contributes to the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of electric vehicle manufacturers.
