Abstract
Recent advances in medical science have significantly improved the quality of human life, transforming many chronic and life-threatening diseases into manageable conditions. Diabetes mellitus is one such disease that requires continuous medical intervention, particularly through insulin therapy. Historically, insulin was extracted from animal sources such as pigs and cattle, which raised serious Shariah concerns regarding its permissibility. However, with the advent of recombinant DNA technology, human insulin is now predominantly produced through biotechnological methods, eliminating most of the earlier ethical and juristic objections. This study examines the reality and sources of insulin, tracing its historical development from animal-derived insulin to modern biosynthetic human insulin. It further analyzes the Omnipod as a contemporary insulin delivery device, highlighting its mechanism, medical benefits, and its role in improving patients’ quality of life by reducing dependency on multiple daily injections. The research then provides a detailed Shariah analysis of both insulin and the Omnipod device, addressing key jurisprudential issues such as permissibility of use, source legitimacy, and their implications for acts of worship, particularly fasting, prayer, and purification. The study concludes that the use of human insulin produced through permissible sources and modern technologies is Islamically lawful, and that the Omnipod  constitutes a permissible means of medical treatment aligned with the objectives of Islamic law (Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah), especially the preservation of life and health.
