Abstract
भारत के उत्तराखण्ड हिमालय के दक्षिणी ढलान पर मानव-आवास योग्य निचली पर्वत श्रेणियों एवं घाटियों में आठ पर्वतीय जनपद- पिथौरागढ़, अल्मोड़ा, नैनीताल, पौढ़ीगढ़वाल, चमोली, टेहरी गढ़वाल, उत्तरकाशी एवं देहरादून और जनपद ऊधमसिंह नगर स्थित हैं। इन सब जिलों के भू-भाग को सम्मिलित रूप में उत्तराखण्ड कहा जाता है। जो इस समय दो प्रशासनिक इकाईयों में विभाजित है, कुमाऊँ मण्डल उक्त प्रथम चार जिले कुमाऊँ का लगभग 4/5 भाग आ जाता है। इसमें पिथरौगढ़़, एवं अल्मोड़ा जिले का सम्पूर्ण भू-भाग नैनीताल जिले क्षेत्र में आता है। नैनीताल जिले की तराई में शताब्दियों से थारू और बुक्सा जनजाति निवास करती आयी हैं। थारू जनजाति अपना सम्बन्ध राजस्थान के राजपूतों से जोड़ते हैं। और बुक्सा जनजाति अपने को धारानगरी के राजपूत राजघरानों से जोड़ते हैं।
