Abstract
In order to carry out a project successfully, project management is essential. The study aimed to reduce unnecessary delays and optimize process flow for the completion of science-based PhD programmes in Nigerian public universities using project evaluation and review technique (PERT) and critical path method(CPM) approaches to network analysis. The research conducted a comprehensive analysis of science-based PhD programmes across 34 selected Nigerian public universities in order to address the problem of prolonged durations for completion of PhD programme primarily attributed to challenges in thesis write-up. Employing network analysis techniques, the study collected data from 356 science-based PhD graduates through an online questionnaire administered using Kobo Collect. Critical and non-critical activities influencing the programme completion times were identified, encompassing various stages from registration to graduation. The optimal completion time was found to be 46.77 months (4 academic sessions), with a high probability (0.6143) of completion within this period. Furthermore, the probabilities of completion within 36 months (3 academic sessions) and 24 months (2 academic sessions) were determined to be 0.5105 and 0.3789, respectively. Recommendations were made for science-based PhD students across the 34 selected Nigerian public universities to utilize the study's findings as a guide to mitigate delays and optimize the process flow toward programme completion.
