Abstract
Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) significantly constrain tomato production, leading to notable economic losses globally. The reliance on synthetic nematicides raises environmental and human health concerns, encouraging the search for sustainable, plant-based alternatives. This study evaluated the in vivo efficacy of Aloe vera extract in suppressing M. incognita infection in tomato plants under greenhouse conditions. Tomato seedlings were inoculated with nematode juveniles and treated with varying concentrations of Aloe vera extract (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Growth parameters and nematode infection indices were assessed 45 days post-inoculation. Results revealed that higher concentrations of Aloe vera significantly reduced gall formation, egg mass counts, and juvenile populations in the soil, while improving plant height and biomass. The findings support the potential of Aloe vera as a promising biocontrol agent for integrated nematode management in tomato cultivation. The study recommends among others that further research should be conducted under open field conditions across diverse agroecological zones to validate the nematicidal efficacy of Aloe vera and assess its consistency and scalability. Studies should focus on the development of optimized formulations (e.g., emulsifiable concentrates, powders, or granules) and appropriate application techniques (e.g., soil drenching, seed treatment) to enhance the bioavailability and effectiveness of Aloe vera extract in different cropping systems.
