Abstract
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a globally important vegetable crop, but its productivity is severely threatened by root-knot nematodes, particularly Meloidogyne incognita. Conventional nematicides used to manage this pest often pose environmental and health risks, prompting the need for safer, plant-based alternatives. This study investigated the in vitro nematicidal efficacy of Aloe vera extract against second-stage juveniles (J2s) of M. incognita under controlled laboratory conditions. Fresh Aloe vera leaves were processed to obtain aqueous extracts at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Approximately 100 J2s were exposed to each treatment in petri dishes and observed at intervals of 24, 48, and 72 hours. Mortality was assessed microscopically, and statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test. Results showed a significant increase in nematode mortality with both concentration and exposure time. After 72 hours, mortality rates ranged from 58.0% at 25% concentration to 95.0% at 100% concentration, compared to only 5.0% in the control. The 100% Aloe vera extract consistently outperformed other treatments (p < 0.05), indicating strong nematicidal potential. The data support a concentration- and time-dependent nematicidal effect attributable to bioactive compounds such as anthraquinones, saponins, and phenolics present in the extract. These findings suggest that Aloe vera extract can serve as an effective, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic nematicides in the management of M. incognita. However, further in vivo and field-based research is recommended to validate its efficacy under natural conditions and develop standardized formulations for agricultural use.
