Abstract
Post-harvest loss has always been an obstacle to the Nigerian policies on food security. Many agricultural products are wasted through post-harvest activities from harvesting, to threshing, storage, and transportation. The study explores the information needs of rice farmers on post-harvest loss. Cross-sectional survey design was employed for this study. Questionnaire was also used as instrument for data collection. The population of the study was 11,681 rice farmers from Kura local government. Sample was selected from the population of the study to come up with 399 respondents. Simple random sampling was used to select individual respondents. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data. Five research objectives guided the study, the objectives dwelled on the demographic characteristics of the respondents, their experience on post-harvest loss, their information needs, their efforts to reduce the loss, and the possible challenges. The findings revealed that majority of the respondents were male, married, with primary and secondary education. More than  of the respondents experienced post-harvest loss (66%), they used pesticides, insecticides, attend training on post-harvest handling, use post-harvest machinery, in their efforts to reduce post-harvest loss. The information needs of the farmers was on proper threshing, knowledge and skills on agricultural technology, good post-harvest practice, proper storage, and storage facilities. The farmers also faced challenges on microorganisms, paste infection, lack of harvesting machine, improper harvesting, threshing, and harvesting at immature stage. It was recommended to the government and other stakeholders to help the farmers with relevant information on post-harvest loss, formulate a policy to minimize the loss, organize sensitization program on post-harvest loss, and post-harvest technology.
