Abstract
This study assesses the effectiveness of extension services in facilitating technology transfer at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were used to gather information from fifty extension agents, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. In particular, the study outlined the socioeconomic attributes of the extension agents, investigated the kinds of extension services that IAR&T offered, identified the kinds of technology that were given to farmers, and looked at the difficulties the institute faced in providing extension services to farmers. Results showed that the most successful extension services were consulting services and research on farming systems. The technologies that were most commonly conveyed to farmers were agricultural systems, small ruminant technologies, and improved maize varieties. However, the biggest obstacle was insufficient and unstable funding (Weighted Mean Score WMS = 1.68), which was followed by poor technology acceptance (WMS = 1.28), no stable coordinating agency (WMS = 1.16), and a shortage of extension agents (WMS = 1.02). Additionally, the study discovered a strong positive correlation between the years of experience (r=0.712, p=0.000), years of educational background of extension workers (r=0.595, p=0.000) and degree of technology transfer through extension services. The study found that among the extension services provided, farmers' technical training and dispute resolution were the least effective. The study suggested that the institution use a variety of funding possibilities, including grants, collaborations, and community-driven fundraising campaigns, to solve the issue of insufficient and inconsistent funding, which was seen as a significant obstacle.
