Abstract
Irrigation is very vital in enhancing crop production and attaining food self-sufficiency. Quality of irrigation water used for irrigation usually affects crop growth, yield as well as the soil properties. Despite these benefits or advantages of irrigation, there were very limited studies that revealed the impact of the different irrigation water sources used to produce crops on the soil chemical properties. This review examined the impact of irrigation water sources on some selected soil chemical properties pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na) and Soil Organic Matter (SOM). Mostly the differences between the irrigated soils with respect to their chemical properties was statistically insignificant except in their Na and SOM content. It can be concluded that irrigation using wastewater increased the level of the soil chemical properties compared to the soils irrigated with other different water sources. It is recommended that regular analysis of water sources used for irrigation be carried out in order to monitor their salt content to prevent and/or reduce the buildup of salt toxicity that may affect the quality of water, soil and crop growth
