Abstract
The study on perceived impacts of computer based test (CBT) among students of Niger state College of Education, Minna, was conducted to determine the perception of students on the use of CBT among students, and to examine challenges students are faced with during the CBT among students of Niger state College of Education, Minna. Research question one determined perception of students on the effectiveness and usability of Computer Based while research question assessed the relationship between students’ perceptions of CBT and their academic performance at Niger State College of Education, Minna. Questionnaire tagged Perception of Students on the use of CBT (PLUCBTQ) was used as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts, the final draft copy was pilot tested and the result revealed a reliability index of 0.82 which implied it was reliable. Simple random sampling procedure was used to select sample population for the study. A sample of 300 students was taken across the six schools in the College. Data collected was analysed using mean and standard deviation for research question one, while multiple regression analysis was used to analyse research question two. Findings of the study revealed that students have positive perception on the use of CBT in examination in Niger state College of Education, Minna, but are faced with challenges using the CBT in Education and General Studies courses examination. Recommendations made included that: good infrastructural facilities should be put in place before the commencement of Education and General Studies courses examination in tertiary institutions using CBT, regular training sessions should be organized for both students and staff to improve their computer literacy and familiarize them with the CBT platform and efforts should be made to ensure that the CBT system accommodates students with special needs. Features such as screen readers, adjustable font sizes, and alternative input methods should be incorporated to give equal opportunities to all category of learners.
