Abstract
                                                               AbstractThis study investigated students’ perceptions of difficult chemistry concepts in public senior secondary schools in Offa, Kwara State, with particular attention to gender differences. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised all Senior Secondary School students in public schools in Offa, from which a random sample of 30 students was drawn across six schools. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of demographic information and 23 items on chemistry topics rated on a four-point Likert scale. The instrument was validated by experts in chemistry education and achieved a reliability coefficient of r = 0.72 using the test–retest method. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests at the 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that female students reported significantly higher levels of perceived difficulty in chemistry topics than male students (χ² = 9.711, df = 2, p = 0.008). In addition, students with negative perceptions of chemistry concepts reported significantly greater difficulties compared to those with positive perceptions (χ² = 7.498, df = 1, p = 0.000). The study concludes that gender and perceptions are critical variables influencing students’ learning experiences in chemistry. It recommends the adoption of gender-sensitive and student-centered instructional strategies, as well as guidance and counselling interventions to foster positive attitudes toward chemistry.
