Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach in promoting the adoption of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) among farmers in the Bakolori Irrigation Scheme, Zamfara State, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 307 participants, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression. Findings revealed that observability (mean = 4.469) and trialability (mean = 3.314) were the most positively perceived innovation attributes of SRI, while compatibility (mean = 2.860) ranked lowest. Results further showed that 68.4% of respondents were willing to adopt all SRI practices, with transplanting young seedlings, transplanting single seedlings per hill, and wider spacing recording universal acceptance. The main reasons for adoption were resource efficiency (46.6%) and higher yield (27.7%). Logistic regression analysis indicated that age (p = 0.042) had a significant negative effect, while knowledge score (p = 0.012) had a positive effect on willingness to adopt, whereas household size, farming experience, and farm size were not significant predictors. Knowledge assessment revealed that 62.3% of respondents had high knowledge of SRI, highlighting the effectiveness of FFS in bridging knowledge gaps. The study concludes that the adoption of SRI is largely determined by farmers’ perceptions of innovation attributes, socioeconomic characteristics, and perceived benefits. It recommends strengthening farmer training through FFS, prioritizing younger farmers in extension programs, ensuring access to critical inputs, and integrating SRI into agricultural policies to achieve sustainable rice intensification in Nigeria.
