Abstract
This paper examines the dynamics of language evolution through major sociolinguistic theories and explores the perceptions, attitudes, and barriers that influence linguistic change. Drawing from Labov’s Variationist Theory, Accommodation Theory, Social Identity Theory, and Diffusion of Innovations, the paper emphasizes that language evolution is not merely structural but deeply embedded in social interaction, cultural negotiation, and identity politics. Case examples including Nigerian Pidgin English, Spanglish in the United States, and the rise of internet slang demonstrate how linguistic innovations are embraced or resisted in diverse sociocultural contexts. The article concludes that while barriers such as purism, policy constraints, and linguistic endangerment persist, language change remains inevitable and integral to human adaptation. The paper made the following suggestion: Future researchers should compare perceptions of language change in Nigeria with other multilingual societies such as Kenya, India, or South Africa to understand similarities and differences in attitudes across contexts, More studies are needed on how digital platforms (e.g., TikTok, WhatsApp, and X/Twitter) influence linguistic innovations among youth and how these forms are perceived by older generations, Researchers may investigate how prevailing ideologies about “standard” and “non-standard” varieties shape classroom practices and students’ language identities, especially in postcolonial nations etc.
