Abstract
Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen-carrying capacity is inadequate to meet physiological changes due to the development and growing of the placenta and foetus. The purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge of anaemia among pregnant mothers attending antenatal clinic at Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria. The study attempted finding answers to research questions by using descriptive statistics. Data was collected from 78 respondents with the aid of structured questionnaire and were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Majority (46.2%) of the respondents are within the age group of 25 to 34 years and  (53.8) of the respondents are Hausas among which (56.4%) had secondary education. The result obtained proved that most (50.0%) of the respondents have good knowledge and awareness of anaemia. The study revealed that majority (71.8%) of the respondent agreed that daily intake of iron and folic acid tablet is the treatment modalities for anaemia in pregnancy. The study further revealed that majority (48%) of the respondent have low knowledge on maternal and fetal complication of aneamia in pregnancy, the study concluded that majority (79.5%) of the respondent agreed that child spacing is the preventive measures for anaemia in pregnancy. The study recommended that the nurses should encourage the pregnant women to register for antenatal care early and emphasis should be given on locally available diet, and the preparation.
