Abstract
This paper explores the influence of workplace toxicity on employee performance within Nigerian organisations, a growing concern in the evolving landscape of remote and hybrid work. Drawing on literature and contextual analysis, it highlights toxic behaviours such as bullying, harassment, incivility, and toxic leadership as major impediments to employee productivity and organisational effectiveness. Evidence indicates a strong negative correlation between workplace toxicity and employee performance. While global studies confirm the universality of toxic work environments, Nigerian organisations face distinctive challenges stemming from rigid hierarchies, weak reporting frameworks, and limited digital infrastructure. The paper argues that mitigating workplace toxicity demands a holistic approach.
