Abstract
This study examined Peer Pressure, Emotional Intelligence, and Gender as Predictors of Social Media Engagement and Academic Achievement among In-School Adolescents in Katsina Metropolis, Katsina State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two objectives from which two research questions and their corresponding null hypotheses were formulated. The study adopted a correlational survey design. The population of the study comprised 3,005 SS II students, in all the eleven public senior secondary schools under Katsina Zonal Education Quality Assurance, out of which 346 were selected as the sample of the study using random sampling technique. The data was collected using three adapted instruments: Peer Pressure Questionnaire, Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, and Social Media Usage Questionnaire. Also, data was collected on academic performance, using Qualifying Examination result scores for SSII students. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and standard error) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation, independent samples t-test, and Multiple Linear Regression). The study revealed that there is no significant relative relationship between peer pressure, emotional intelligence and academic performance among in-school adolescent in Katsina Metropolis, The study also concludes that there was no significant difference in students’ academic performance as well as social media usage between males and females in-school adolescents in Katsina Metropolis. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Peer pressure and emotional intelligence significantly affect students’ academic performance among in-school adolescents, teachers as well as parents should take this into consideration in guiding their children to associate with good peers. This will definitely help in inculcating good virtues and behaviours in them as well as improvement in the academic performance of students, Parents should be aware of the concept of emotional intelligence and the fact that it affects students’ academic performance and social media usage. This will help in motivating the students for improved academic achievement and school authorities should do the needful in ensuring that only educational social networking sites are allowed in their e-libraries and internet centres. This will help in preventing the students from accessing other sites that were not meant for educational purposes.
