Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the role of health education in promoting security awareness and safe practices among secondary school students in the Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. In this study, a quasi-experimental, pre-test and post-test control group design was employed. The population of the study consisted of all senior secondary school students in the study area. A total of 150 students from two secondary schools were selected using a multi-stage procedure and divided into an experimental group (n=75) and a control group (n=75). Researchers structured questionnaire was used to collect data on students’ knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors regarding security. It was validated by experts in Health Education and subjected to a pilot study that yielded 0.71. A four-week health education intervention was administered to the experimental group, focusing on personal safety, cybersecurity, and conflict resolution. The findings revealed no significant difference between the two groups at baseline. However, the post-test results showed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group’s knowledge, attitudes, and safe behaviors compared to the control group (p < .05). The mean scores for security awareness increased from 52.8 to 78.4 in the experimental group, while the control group’s scores remained the same. Also, the study identified personal safety and cybersecurity as the most effective components of the intervention. The findings suggest that health education is a powerful and proactive tool for empowering students to navigate security threats. The study therefore recommends among others that  Ministry of Education, Kano State, should formally integrate a comprehensive and compulsory health education curriculum that includes security-related topics such as personal safety, conflict resolution, and cybersecurity. This curriculum should be a core subject from the early secondary school years.
