Abstract
The study investigated the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technological tools on critical thinking among undergraduates in the Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The rapid integration of AI technologies in higher education has raised important questions about their impact on students’ cognitive abilities, particularly critical thinking. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and the population comprised all Faculty of Education undergraduates for the 2024/2025 academic session. A structured questionnaire titled Artificial Intelligence Technological Tools and Critical Thinking Skills Scale (AITTCTSS) was used for data collection. Stratified random sampling was employed to select respondents across various departments. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean, standard deviation, and t-test. Findings revealed that AI tools, when effectively utilized, significantly enhance students’ problem-solving, reflective reasoning, and analytical abilities. However, overdependence on AI resources tends to weaken independent reasoning. The study concluded that AI technological tools hold great potential for fostering critical thinking if integrated purposefully into teaching and learning processes. It was recommended that lecturers and students receive training on the ethical and pedagogical use of AI technologies to ensure balanced and reflective learning experiences.
