Abstract
This study investigated the Mediating role of Counsellors in the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Conflict Management Strategies among Undergraduates of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The study adopted descriptive survey designed. The population of the study comprises 282 participants (151 males and 131 females) undergraduates of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria residing in hostels and was selected using simple random sampling technique. The research instruments were two (2) a survey questionnaire adopted from Galman et al (2021) to measure emotional intelligence and Rahim five model (2023) was adopted to measure the conflict management strategies. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, rank order and One Way Analysis of Variance. The study reveals that undergraduates of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria residing in hostels have higher emotional intelligence on conflict resolution skills emotions and can better manage conflict and adopt more effective conflict resolution tactics. Result findings indicates that female undergraduates’ emotional intelligence, self-management achieved the highest mean score of 3.63, indicating an above-average level. On the other hand, relationship management obtained the lowest mean score of 3.32, also interpreted as above average. It is recommended that university administration to strengthen counselling training programs, awareness to enhance emotional intelligence skills for undergraduates, organize workshops or counselling focusing on effective conflict management and communication skills, including active listening, assertiveness, and empathy; programs that encourage students to engage in ongoing self-reflection and develop personal development strategies crucial for continuously enhancing emotional intelligence tailored effective conflict management skills. Emotional intelligence can silence the conflict and rebuild relationships and counsellors have a vital role to play in.
