Abstract
This study examines the influence of entrepreneurial attributes, creativity, and self-efficacy on the performance of small businesses in Lagos State, Nigeria. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in Nigeria’s economic growth, employment generation, and poverty reduction; however, many struggle with sustainability and competitiveness due to limited entrepreneurial capabilities. Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy Theory, this research explores how individual entrepreneurial qualities contribute to business success in dynamic and challenging environments. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data collected from a sample of small business owners across selected local government areas in Lagos State. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine the relationship between entrepreneurial attributes, creativity, self-efficacy, and business performance. The findings revealed that creativity and entrepreneurial self-efficacy significantly enhance innovation, adaptability, and profitability, while personal initiative and risk-taking propensity contribute to sustainable performance. The study concludes that strengthening entrepreneurial attributes through capacity-building, mentoring, and access to innovation-driven training programs is crucial for improving small business outcomes. It recommends that policymakers and enterprise development agencies prioritize programs that foster creativity and self-efficacy to build resilient, competitive, and growth-oriented small businesses in Nigeria.
