Abstract
Nigeria’s agricultural sector remains a critical driver of national food security, employment, and economic growth; however, it continues to face deep-rooted challenges that limit productivity and sustainability. Dominated by rain-fed subsistence farming, with over 80% of crop production dependent on rainfall, the sector is highly vulnerable to climate variability and environmental stressors such as land degradation, pest infestations, and water scarcity. Despite Nigeria’s global prominence in the production of staple crops like cassava and yam, substantial yield gaps—reaching up to 76% for some crops persist due to limited mechanization, poor access to quality inputs, and low adoption of modern technologies. Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer transformative potential to address these constraints by optimizing resource use, improving soil and irrigation management, forecasting weather, detecting diseases, and enhancing livestock management. Yet, AI adoption in Nigerian agriculture remains minimal and under-documented. Existing AI-driven platforms are primarily private-sector led, often business-oriented rather than service-focused, with their sustainability hinging on farmer awareness and engagement.
